Cool new art to see this weekend |
|
"KAWS: WHAT PARTY" |
Brooklyn Museum's biggest exhibit this spring opens tomorrow. You may have seen KAWS' giant cartoon-y characters with X's for eyes around the city, but this is the first time Brooklyn-based artist Brian Donnelly has had a major New York survey of his work, which includes rarely seen graffiti drawings, paintings, smaller collectibles, furniture and his popular "Companion" figures.
"Grief and Grievance" |
The New Museum has filled its galleries with a compelling exhibition of artworks by 37 Black artists, including Jean-Michael Basquiat, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Kara Walker, who explore mourning, commemoration, and loss from racist violence in America through their art.
Voodo' Fe at Chelsea Market |
You can take in a free art exhibit while you're at Chelsea Market this weekend—artist Voodo' Fe has installed seven-foot-tall portraits of the "most pivotal individuals in our nation’s history and pop culture" throughout its halls. Harriet Tubman, The Notorious BIG, Kobe Bryant, Run DMC, Frida Kahlo and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are some of those honored in the exhibit.
