The 26 best things to do in January |
Don’t think for a second that things are slowing down in NYC this month! The city’s cultural life is moving full steam ahead with tons of exciting events and experiences. From private igloos at Rockefeller Center to rooftop ice skating rinks and can’t-miss museum exhibitions, you’ll find them all here. |

Eat |
I can’t recommend the delicious Ethiopian dishes from Bunna Cafe enough. The restaurant offers combos featuring five ($14) or seven dishes ($18). You can’t go wrong with the duba wot (sweet pumpkin cubes and spicy berbere) or yatakilt alicha (turmeric-spice cabbage and potatoes.)
Drink |
Every day is Halloween at Tim Burton-themed watering hole Beetle House in the East Village. Starting Friday, you can warm up with a chill down your spine at their new outdoor Fire and Ice Bar. Try the winterberry cider martini with zero-degree vodka that forms a cloud of steam once poured into a hot cider martini.
Do |
My favorite ice rink this winter has been the one at Lakeside Prospect Park. Two massive, adjoined rinks provide ample space for skating, and the rinkside Bluestone Café and Bar serves up burgers and fries with a view.

Local artists are transforming NYC’s outdoor dining set-ups |
|
The outdoor dining areas currently covering your neighborhood’s streets may be getting a lot more colorful. The Curbside Canvas Project is pairing volunteer artists with local businesses to provide some much-needed splashes of color to the streetscape. Check out some of the cool “streeteries” they’ve already designed. |

A look inside the new Moynihan Train Hall |
After three years of construction and $1.6 billion, Penn Station’s long-awaited new (above ground!) space, Moynihan Train Hall, is now open to the public. Check out the soaring ceilings, expansive rooms, impressive skylights and more that you have to look forward to the next time you travel through the transit hub. |

Three cool new works of art to look out for |
Let’s be honest: any new space would be an improvement on the subterranean tunnels that have defined Penn Station since the ‘60s. But there are also some remarkable new works of art in the train hall. Here’s what to look out for—from a stained-glass triptych by Kehinde Wiley to photographic nods to the old Penn Station. |

NYC restaurants upgrading frozen dinners |
|
Forget those grocery store chains! Fill your freezer (and support local businesses) with these tasty frozen dinners and prepared food offerings from local restaurants. We’re talking frozen dumplings from Mimi Cheng’s, frozen pasta kits from Rezdôra and—if you’re really looking to stock up—frozen brisket, pastrami and corned beef from Katz’s Deli. |
