How to make the most of fall in Montreal

Make the most of Montréal in the fall
We may be in lockdown, but we’re not locked up. Getting outside is one of those last few pleasures Montrealers can enjoy before winter hits, and with the rest of the month looking like good weather—minus a few rainy days here and there—why not try visiting these beautiful locations where fall foliage burns brightest?

The best candy stores in Montréal
Halloween’s going to look really different this year, no doubt about it. If you want to keep the kids home this year, or you’re planning to chill at home with horror movies, keep the spooky vibes alive with some candy. Montréal’s got a lot to check out, from international imports and bulk bags to artisanal caramels and jellies to snack on. It’s a pre-hibernation diet, people!

What to check out this month
Now-Nov 1 Go see a Halloween light show at this drive-thru in Laval
Cirque du Soleil co-creator Normand Latourelle's Laval-based village of lights Illumi has been a huge attraction ever since it first set up shop, and it’s only getting bigger. They’ve outdone themselves with a huge Halloween village made of 12 million lights across decorations and 30,000 sculptures of ghosts and ghouls in 17 different themed sections. Go for a spin and get your head spinning.
The best of the rest:
Anytime Enjoy fall foliage by a waterfall: It feels good to get away from the island now and then, and it’s even better to explore some natural grandeur in the city’s backyard. These waterfalls near Montréal become even more brilliant when surrounded by the colours of fall. Get out there and explore!

Through Nov 8 Virtual reality films from the comfort of your couch: We’re approaching the final days to try PHI Centre’s VR TO GO. Don’t know it? Get a VR headset sent straight to your house and experience a film festival unlike any other, turning your living room into Mount Everest, deep space, the copycat cities of China and beyond.

Anytime Visit the tribute to the visiting whale: We only know it as the ‘Montréal whale’, and while its visit was brief and its death was untimely, we’ll always remember it—especially since one local artist has built a public art installation to commemorate its visit to our water. You can visit it now here.

What to eat this week: Haitian surf and turf from Paul Toussaint
Trips to the steakhouse for a beef-lobster platter ain’t on our menus anytime soon, but we’ve got the next best thing: Spice things up this with Montréal’s best Haitian chef Paul Toussaint’s recipes for pineapple-and-rhum ribs or jerk Cornish hen paired with grilled seafood skewers or ceviche. If you like it spicy, add some crunchy pikliz or scotch bonnet sauce and kick it up a notch like Emeril Lagasse.

Thinking of staying in? We’ll send dishes from the best chefs of the city to you. Find out how to get delivery from Time Out Market Montréal.

What’s new in food?
In the last month, this city’s seen a big bunch of ghost kitchens and all-new names on the gastronomy scene, and we’ve rounded them all up here. There are comfort foods like full-to-burst bento boxes and burgers made by a Noma-trained chef, as well as fresh sourdough panzerotti (think pizza pockets where the flavor’s cranked to 11) and much, much more.
Knuckles
This new Italian cantine’s set up shop in an old dépanneur (with a repurposed beer fridge stocked with wines!) and they’re doing a lot of delicious specialties and pasta.
Menu Extra
One of Montreal’s most luxurious pop-ups has set up a more permanent space doing one amazingly savory dish: Pithiviers, French pastry pies, stuffed with foie gras and duck.
Gentile Pizza Parlour
This isn’t just another pizza joint: Café Gentile’s new parlour has turned the elusive New York-style pizza into a science. Check out our interview with their pizzaiolo here.
Ratafia’s Cake-Out
This takeout—er, “cake-out”—option in Montreal’s back and they’re keeping things fresh by doing flambée kits you can bring home and set your desserts on fire with.

Future Cities, Now!
What will Montréal look like next year? In a decade’s time? In 2050? To predict what the future’s going to look like by asking local architects, businesses, nightclub owners, politicians, activists and more about what’s in store for the city. Watch this space and find out about how Montréal is changing for the better environmentally, socially and economically.
