Future Los Angeles, now! The 20 people, places and things shaping a better city today |
We can’t even predict what the rest of the day has in store, so we surely can’t predict the future. But we can turn our attention to the local designers, activists, museums, politicians, nonprofits, businesses and technologies that are clearing the path for an L.A. that’s kinder, more tolerant, better informed and maybe a little less automobile dependent. Whether they’re impacting the city’s policies, transit networks, parks, streets, support systems or beaches, these are the 20 people, places and things that are shaping a better future for Los Angeles now. | |

What to do this week |
|
Fri SOUND/STAGE |
Watch L.A. native and wildly innovative saxophonist Kamasi Washington perform his score to the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming from an empty Hollywood Bowl. |
The best of the rest: |
Mon–Fri Catch panels with the cast of New Girl and a conversation between Rachel Bloom and her fifth-grade bully during a streaming edition of the usually-held-in-Hollywood Vulture Festival.
Sat at 9pm Put together your best Stevie Nicks bouffant—and we guess grab a skateboard and a bottle of Ocean Spray?—for this Halloween edition of Fleetmac Wood, a tongue twister of a streaming dance party that exclusively spins Fleetwood Mac.
Sat, Sun 11:30am–8pm Get Smorgasburg L.A. favorites like Tacos 1986 and Shrimp Daddy delivered during the final weekend of the food fair’s Smorg Delivered service.

Haunted houses for drive-through scares |
You can’t get chased through a maze by a chainsaw-wielding maniac this year, but you can drive into the Upside Down or through a town full of monsters at these car-friendly events. |
|
|
What about trick-or-treating? |
The short answer? Don’t do it. The longer one? L.A. County isn’t recommending trick-or-treating (and some cities have flat-out banned it), but has offered some safer alternatives. |

13 places in L.A. that are haunted for real |
Of course we don’t actually believe in ghosts. But, uh, you know, we’ll avoid going alone at night to these spots—haunted by reports of singing heard in an empty theater or a shadowy reflection in a hotel mirror—just to be safe. |

More of L.A.’s best Halloween events |
Did we mention the ghoulish rooftop dinner, the zombie-filled drive-in, the pavilion stuffed with real spiders or the boozy party pack delivered by a Dracula puppet? Yeah, that’s all in here, too. |
